Wanda Witter is an intelligent elderly woman who recently celebrated her 80th birthday. Her way of life is certainly not easy and if it were not for the attention of a social worker, no one knows how her life would have turned out. Here’s the thing.
As a young woman Wanda worked as a typist, and even after retirement she never gave up – she mastered a new profession, became a paralegal and decided to move to Washington, DC in the hope of finding work in the capital. But for the elderly woman, who is already over 60, there was no place in the big city.
She could only find a temporary job and soon she had no money to pay her rent. So the woman ended up on the street and had to sleep in a night shelter or right on the street in a sleeping bag. But it was even more complicated than that.
Yes, she was receiving a pension, but something was wrong: the amount of her pension payments varied greatly from month to month, from $300 to $900. The woman tried to find out why, but no one paid any attention to the homeless old woman’s complaints.
Wanda knew that once the checks were cashed and her pension was issued, it would be very difficult to prove anything. That is why she did not use the money, but sent the checks back to the office, demanding explanations.
By the way, Wanda has four grown children. The elderly woman didn’t tell them that she was nowhere to live, she only called occasionally to say she was okay. When her daughter did find out, she urged her mother to move in with her. But the woman stood her ground and said she would not leave until she had her money back in full.
The woman kept all the correspondence she had with the agencies in her suitcases. Wanda always carried three huge bags with her and people began to think that the old lady was crazy and that there was trash inside, advising her to throw them away immediately.
The stubborn old lady lived in a homeless shelter for 16 years. One day she told her story to a shelter worker named Julie Turner. The woman asked to see Wanda’s papers. When she saw the contents of the suitcases, she was amazed, they were a neat stack of papers accumulated over many years.
Julie helped Wanda find a lawyer who agreed to defend the “crazy” homeless woman. On August 23, Wanda Vitter received a transfer of $99,000. The woman’s lawyer believes it was not all the money the government owed her.
Wanda still has a hard time realizing that she was successful. Eventually, she rented an apartment and moved out of the homeless shelter.
It’s worth saying that this woman’s tenacity is enviable.
She fought so hard for the truth that she chose to spend many years in a homeless shelter until she had a chance to get justice. Do you think Wanda did the right thing?
