It’s not often that you see people acting in good conscience when it comes to valuable finds. Our story is about a man who collects antiques all his life. It’s fundamental to him that all the furniture in his house is antique, so he’s always looking for antiques.
In his 67 years, Emil Knodel has seen many things in life, but with such a dresser, which he saw at the sale, he encountered for the first time. The thing is that the former marketing director learned that in one estate will hold a sale of things, which was organized by the son of the owner, who has passed away. Only later would it become clear that he hadn’t even tried to figure out the true value of the items. What’s so special about this whole story?
A dresser with a surprise.
The son of the mansion owner himself didn’t know how old the items he took to the garage sale outside the house were. It all took place one weekend at 12 o’clock, where everything was bought out by antique lovers in literally two hours. When Emil Knodel arrived with his friend, he saw that he could load a dresser with a marble inlay into his car.
It blended harmoniously with the overall picture of the kitchen-living room, which also had marble pieces. The owner liked not just vintage things, and too expensive, but the dresser was lucky to buy for only 100 dollars.
The seller clearly didn’t realize that the 125 year old dresser could have been sold for much more, because after restoration and varnishing, it could have lasted another as many years, greatly increasing its price.
Emil’s misunderstanding of the price became clear when they were unloading the dresser already at home – they heard a strange sound, and then began to examine the dresser. They found a secret compartment that wasn’t even locked.
When they opened the secret compartment, they saw lots of gold coins, jewelry, antique bills, and even diamonds. It was clear that it was the previous owner’s stash. What did Emil do with his find?
Since Emil was a marine by profession, he had a keen sense of conscience.
For this reason, he could not keep all these goods for himself if they were not intended for him-the son of the mansion’s owner was clearly in a hurry to sell his belongings. Emil decided to return all the treasures to his son, thus making it clear that he should not have been in such a hurry.
The son was surprised, for he, too, was already of an age, but for so many years he had not even guessed that his father had a stash in his dresser drawer. He had passed away so suddenly that apparently he just didn’t have time to tell anyone about the stash.
Everyone was happy after finding and finding it, for Emil explained his act by saying that one should be an honest man. According to his logic, he bought the dresser, not its contents, so he did the right thing by returning the treasure to the son of the owner of the mansion.
You can decide in different ways about the find, because even experienced lawyers can say that Emile had every right to keep the contents. One: he did not examine the contents of the dresser when he purchased it, so it went with the dresser in one piece. Two: He found the treasure after the fact, after the purchase and in his home. What would you do in the case of such a valuable find? Would you invoke your conscience?
