From time to time, nature throws us riddles that we are unable to solve on our own. This is the kind of puzzle that the world community has asked the small village of Kodini (sometimes Kodinhi) in India.
It is worth noting: it is small only by Indian standards, where the population density is sometimes incredibly high. So, at the moment in the village there are about 2 thousand families, and in every tenth of them there are twin children.
Yes, according to the last census, there are 204 pairs of twins and some triplets in the village, which is quite different from the data we are used to. So, normally there are only nine twin births per 1,000 births. Here, however, there are 45 twin births per 1,000 births.
That’s 5 times the “norm”! And scientists can not even name the exact cause of this phenomenon. It is noteworthy that 79 pairs of twins are now aged 0 to 10 years, which subtly hints: twins are beginning to be born more often.
At the moment they were able to establish only the time of the first known pair of twins (this does not mean that before they were not, they just did not say) – 1949, but the cause remains a puzzle for scientists. After all, this village is no different from any other village in India: there are no dangerous industries or sacred sites nearby.
It is the most ordinary settlement, where nature simply gave a very interesting failure of statistics. Now in the village are coming scientists and journalists, as well as Indian women who want to get pregnant. These women believe if you come here and breathe the local air and eat local foods, you can get pregnant.
Of course, this excitement has given rise to many different theories about what is going on. Including conspiracy theories. So, someone associated the beginning of the twins with the end of World War II and the actions of German researchers.
Supposedly, they came to India from Germany, to continue their experiments on humans. However, no evidence of this theory, scientists have not found. In addition, there was an assumption of a special diet and even a blessed place.
But people here eat the same food as everyone else. And the women who left Codini continue to give birth to twins anyway. Moving out of the village does not affect their reproductive functions.
