You think it’s impossible to buy a house by mistake? Cal and Claire’s story of lovers tells a different story. The couple wanted to buy the house through an auction. The guys did so, but then it turned out that they became owners of a mansion that is more than 120 years old.
What should be done in such a difficult situation? There are only two options: either try to sell as quickly as possible, or independently engage in restoration of the structure. Cal Hunter and his girlfriend Claire Sageren were going to buy a two-room apartment in Glasgow, which survived the fire. That’s why they put it up for auction. But the man mixed up the lot numbers and paid £30,000 (just over 2.5m) for a lakeside mansion in the Scottish town of Dunoon.
When the girl found out about the mistake, she almost had a stroke. And although the house was only 35 km from the place where the couple planned to move to, still it was almost two decades empty. In addition, the guys dreamed of a cozy little house, and here is a real and dilapidated manor. However, the young people quickly pulled themselves together and began to work out a plan of further action.
The condition of the building was extremely poor. The roof was leaking, and the whole house fell into the category for demolition. Hence the price. The guys were strongly advised to demolish the structure and find more appropriate housing. But the couple decided to try to restore the building, which smells of the “spirit of antiquity”. Besides, the place itself is very beautiful.
Hunter and Sageren restored the building into three blocks-one was for living quarters, the rest were supposed to be rented out. The money collected from the guests was to be used to pay off the mortgage.
The lovers themselves, for the duration of the repair, moved into a trailer nearby. Due to the lack of money they do all the work themselves, sometimes involving friends. The young people take showers at the neighbors’. The renovation has been going on for over two years, but Cal and Claire are not discouraged, assuring that the housewarming is just around the corner.
