Siamese twins are very complicated children. They come into the world rarely, and each such case is unique in its own way. It is not always possible to separate these babies without the death of one of them.
Such operations can only be performed by competent specialists with extensive experience, but even they are not always able to achieve a happy outcome.
The case of Isabel and Abby Carlson, like others, is unique. The girls were born joined at birth. The heart of one sister was in the chest of the other.
Also, many of their internal organs were connected, making it difficult for medics to work with them. Doctors weren’t sure if the operation to separate the sisters would work, and they warned the parents. But if Isabelle and Abby had remained attached, they would not have survived into adulthood. The surgery was performed simultaneously by 17 specialists, specializing in different fields.
For doctors, as well as for the girls’ parents, it was a true miracle that the sisters survived. In 2008, medicine was already on a fairly high level of development, but despite this, cases of Siamese twins has always caused difficulties for doctors. In the case of Isabelle and Abby, though, things were especially difficult. But the medics successfully managed to cope with the task. Now the sisters are already in their teens.
The girls are 13 years old. They study at school, attend gymnastics classes, socialize with friends and live an ordinary life. Even though they were separated 15 years ago, the close bond has been maintained. The girls spend a lot of time together, holding hands and being friendly. The sisters cannot imagine their life without each other, but they are sincerely glad that the doctors gave them the opportunity to become full-fledged and independent individuals.
