Tyler and Chrissy Jackson found themselves in a tight spot. They desperately needed a new wheelchair for their disabled son, Killian, but couldn’t afford one. This went on until high school students at Farmington High School in Minnesota stepped in. With a little effort and dedication, they created a terrific wheelchair that little Killian would love. The fact is that two-year-old Killian was born with a genetic defect that seriously affected his motor function. Tyler and his wife Chrissy wanted Killian to have more independence with a power wheelchair. However, they could not get one because insurance did not cover such costs. So Tyler decided to contact the robotics team to see if they could help build something for Killian.
Spencer Elwebak, coach of the award-winning team, pitched the idea to the team. They unanimously agreed to help the little guy by designing his own electric wheelchair for him. The task required hours of daily work, but the students were ready for it.Using their skills, the team worked together to turn the Power Wheels toy into an electric wheelchair that Killian could easily use. They replaced most of the toy’s electrical components and installed a seat from a bicycle with a seat belt. They also added a special joystick to help Killian get around. The end result was a cool new way to get around that Killian immediately became attached to. His parents were really impressed with the students’ work. “It really helps him live his life in a way he never has before,” Chrissy shared.
This win meant more to the robotics team than any competition. The realization that they had built something that positively impacted a child’s life was an incredible victory. “Instead of just doing a task, we’re helping to change someone’s life,” said team member Drew Eisenzimmer. Yes, little Killian’s life was forever changed thanks to this wonderful team!
