There was a wonderful moment in Charlize Theron’s life that she still warmly remembers. A moment when she circled in the dance with Channing Tatum. It was at the 2013 Academy Awards.
According to Charlize, Seth MacFarlane, the host of that ceremony, deliberately misled her when he offered to take part in the dance number.
He let her know that it would be something simple and unpretentious, like “fling yourself up on stage and spin around”.
But then the actress was suddenly invited to a rehearsal and it turned out to be “a whole damn choreographic number” where she sweated seven times before it turned out something delightful.
Until then, Charlize had not been seen in musical films or dance numbers. Whereas Tatum made a name for himself by playing a street dancer in the film Step Up (2006), where his character had to become a partner of a ballerina and their dance story turned into a love story.
Since then, Tatum has danced occasionally in movies. Super Mike (2012), Long Live Caesar (2016). And even in the latest adventure melodrama The Lost City (2022), the actor had to spin in a dance with his partner Sandra Bullock.
Well, those rehearsals with Charlize went “Hooray!” and all ended well. The dance these two did was beautiful, performed to the song The Way You Look Tonight. The song that Dermot Mulroney hummed in Julia Roberts’ ear in The Best Friend Wedding.
For Charlize, it “turned out to be an amazing experience.” Including thanks to a brilliant partner.
