When choosing a dog, very often people pay attention to its appearance, and do not think about the features of the breed, which form the behavior pattern of a four-legged friend. Some species have to be trained, often with the involvement of professionals, to smooth out the breed’s characteristic behavioral moment.
For example, the Patterdale Terrier is a charming smooth-haired dog, which at first sight is just created for living in apartments with people. But they were bred for hunting. And if the dog is not handled, the hunting instinct will sooner or later take over. That’s what happened in West Sussex. And it’s a good thing it didn’t.
Margaret was walking her husband’s patterdale terrier dog that day. The breed was bred in the 1960s specifically for hunting foxes and raccoons. Her husband, Joe, is an avid hunter and had a dog specifically for his hobby.
The dog, first named Cookie, walked peacefully alongside his mistress, but then suddenly broke away and raced toward a nearby clearing. The woman ran after him, but is it humanly possible to catch up with a hunting dog? The dog vanished into thin air. Literally, as it turned out.
When Margaret listened, she heard the voice of the four-legged pet really underground. Cookie dived down the rabbit hole, but it turned out to be too big for her and got stuck. The dog could not get back out on his own. The owner tried to pull the animal out, but Cookie panicked and actively worked with his paws, thus crawling even deeper into the hole.
The woman had to call 911. Rescuers found the location of the dog with special equipment, and proceeded to the rescue operation. The entire process took about 7 hours. Under the ground was not just a hole, but a network of branches created by local animals.
The main difficulty was to determine the depth of location of the hapless hunter. Fortunately, everything turned out well: the patterdale terrier was dug up and returned to its owner.
At home, the woman had to listen to her husband’s dissatisfaction and now Cookie no longer walks without a leash.
