Lilia Bachinskaya found out that she would become a mother again in the spring of 2019. The family already had three sons growing up, so both Lilia and her husband Anatoly dreamed of a girl.
The couple went for an ultrasound in anticipation, but the study revealed that Lilia was expecting Siamese twins. The babies were joined at the head to each other, so the doctors assumed they could not be separated.Despite the doctors’ advice, Lilia decided to give birth. She understood the complexity of the situation, but something inside told her that everything would be okay.
On December 30, 2019, twin girls Abigail and Michaela (or as their parents affectionately call them, Abi and Mika) were born. As expected, the sisters were joined at the head. But research has shown that the girls do not share many parts of the brain, which gave a real chance for their successful separation.
Preparations for the upcoming separation procedure began almost immediately after the birth of the children. It took the specialists about 9 months to calculate all their actions ahead of time and prepare the clinic.
In October of 2020, everything was ready. A team of thirty specialists from the California Children’s Hospital was engaged in the separation of the girls. The procedure lasted 24 hours. All ended well, and both girls turned out to be perfectly healthy.
Doctors literally gave the little girls a new lifeLily stayed with the babies at the clinic for about six months after the surgery, while little Abi and Myka were getting used to their new way of life.
Now, almost two years after separation, the Bachinsk twin sisters are almost no different from their peers. They are just a little behind in their development, but they are quickly narrowing this difference.Ahead of the girls are a few more procedures, but already cosmetic. Doctors are sure that in a few years Mika and Eby won’t believe that once they were Siamese twins.
By the way, at the end of last year Abigail and Mikaela had a baby brother – Lily became a mother once again. The perfectly healthy baby was named Adam. Do you think Lilija did the right thing when she decided to give birth despite the doctors’ persuasion.
