Zachary Corrado has had Merlin, an Irish Greyhound, since the four-legged friend was three months old. He is now almost five years old.Together, they often walk off-leash at the beach in Myrtle Beach, S.C., where it is allowed. It never used to be a problem. But last year, a joyride turned into a nightmare when a truck hit Merlin, braked briefly and drove away. Drew and Sharon witnessed the horrific accident and rushed to Merlin’s side when Zachary came running in.
The dog was in critical condition and had little chance of survival. His owner pleaded with the unknown couple to help him. Stressed and in tears, he explained that Merlin was his best friend and that he could not let him die.It took six people to get the dog safely into Zachary’s car. Along with Drew and Sharon, they rushed to the nearest animal hospital. Fortunately, all the traffic lights were green while the four-legged friend was fighting for his life.
Luckily, the vets were able to save his life. Fortunately, the vets were able to save his life. They explained that it was a matter of minutes! Merlin survived and will even be able to walk again. Zachary said the surgery took more than six hours involving surgeons and two assistants. That kind of surgery doesn’t come cheap. Zachary had to take out a loan to pay the $9,500 bill.
The man who hit the dog ran away and has yet to be found. However, Zachary now always makes sure Merlin is on a leash, even if he is let loose. Unfortunately, accidents happen all too quickly, even if you think there is no danger!
