The Internet is overflowing with all kinds of stories. However, there are some that are so touching or unique that they end up going viral.HoB is an Indian photo blog about people in Mumbai. It was founded in 2014 by Karishma Mehta. Mehta and her team document the stories of individuals and show them to the world through social media posts and a website.
A recent HoB post is about a Mumbai auto rickshaw driver named Desraj, who sold his house to pay for his granddaughter’s education and now sleeps in his car.Desraj lost both of his sons. However, the responsibility for his grandchildren kept him busy. After his second son died, when his granddaughter asked him if she should drop out of school, he replied, “Never! You will study as much as you want.”
Desraj then began to work harder to fund her education. When his granddaughter graduated with a score of 80 percent, he was so thrilled that he gave away free car rides to his clients during the day. And when she told him she wanted to go outside of Mumbai to pursue a bachelor’s degree, he did everything he could to make her dream come true. Desraj sold his house and sent his family to relatives in the country. He now sleeps in his car.
This story of Desraj’s has touched many people on social media. “Such an inspiration he is to everyone. May all his wishes come true,” commented one user. “Such a sweet soul. Despite so many setbacks, he only looks on the bright side of things. It’s so important to him to prioritize his granddaughter’s education. God bless him,” wrote another.
But things didn’t stop with words of support. Users organized a fundraiser to support the man. The total amount came to 2.4 million rupees (2.1 million rubles). With this money Desraj plans to buy a new house. It’s a story worthy of a film adaptation. It also makes one appreciate such a precious opportunity as getting an education. After all, many are left to dream about it.
