Having a good neighbor is so nice! Knowing that you can get help when you need it, that you can talk and work things out together instead of hating each other and getting into mischief, is so comforting. Kathy Felt has had two of her neighbors for over 10 years and this is her story.
Living in a good neighborhood is something everyone appreciates, especially if you have children. And it’s always reassuring to know that you live next door to friendly people who are willing to lend a hand if you need it.Kathy Felt would do anything to stay in her neighborhood. She has multiple sclerosis and because of this disease, she feels like a prisoner in her home.
Multiple sclerosis is a disease that attacks the central nervous system and causes inflammation of the nerve fibers. This can prevent movement and lead to paralysis.Kathy couldn’t even get out of bed herself, but refused to move into a nursing home. One day, she heard a knock on her door from one of her neighbors who had heard about Kathy’s situation and was determined to help her.
He thought he could make her life easier. At first she was skeptical, but since she didn’t have much choice, she figured there was no harm in trying.Every morning, her two sons would come over to help her out of bed, but unfortunately they didn’t have the opportunity to do so at night.A neighbor managed to gather 60 strong men from the community of Sandy, Utah, USA, who agreed to help her get to bed at night.
They set up a schedule and every night two men carry her from her wheelchair to her bed and make sure she is okay and has everything she needs. This has been going on for 10 years and there have even been times when they have had too many volunteers! This kind of gesture seems great to us. It is by all of us pulling together that society helps to make everyday life so much easier!
